CELEBRATE MEDICARE’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY
LOVE IT! IMPROVE IT! EXPAND IT TO ALL!

Medicare is a federal health insurance program enacted and signed into law in 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson. It currently covers 17 % of the population which totals 55 million Americans- people age 65 and older and younger people with permanent disabilities. It was originally conceived as a first step toward covering everyone under a national health insurance program. Medicare has sharply reduced poverty among seniors and has improved the financial security of their families. It has also reduced the health disparities related to race, ethnicity, and class status. Patients in traditional Medicare can go to the doctor, hospital of their choice and it only spends about 2% on administrative overhead compared to private insurance whose overhead and profits amount to 12-14% or more. Individual insurance market overhead is around 20-30%

March and Rally
JULY 30, 2015

Assemble at UPMC HEADQUARTERS
(GRANT STREET, DOWN TOWN PITTSBURGH)
March to HIGHMARK
(120 Fifth Ave)

Medicare is under attack today through budget cuts and privatization. Cutting it would increase poverty, worsen health outcomes and increase costs. Private insurance companies like Highmark and UPMC control the health care delivery system and have vested interests in the privatization of Medicare. The “for profit” insurance industry has high overhead expenses including advertising, underwriting, and lavish payouts to executives and shareholders.

The current fight between UPMC and HIGHMARK has no winners for us – PATIENTS AND TAXPAYERS!
Join with us to demand:

NO PRIVATIZATION OF MEDICARE (e.g. vouchers, premium support payments)
